The “Trump Effect” on Immigration

In the years from 2010 to 2017, legal and illegal immigrants arrived in the United States at a rate of 650,000 per year. When Donald Trump took office in 2016, this rate decreased to 200,000 per year. People attribute this slowdown to the policies that the Trump Administration approved throughout the years.

These facts are telling us that the beliefs of some people are not true. For example, they said that the government cannot control immigration because it is driven by economics and not policy. The lower courts, the federal bureaucracy, several states and Congress resisted the changes adopted by the Trump Administration, but the rates of illegal and legal immigration went down.

The 2019 American Community Survey tells us that immigrants die at a rate of 300,000 per year as some immigrants decide to leave on their own. These numbers are telling us that fewer people are coming into the U.S. at the same time that some immigrants took the initiative to return to their home countries.

In 2016, the last year that President Barack Obama was in office, 1.7 million immigrants arrived in the U.S. In 2017, 1.4 million immigrants came to the U.S., and in 2018, 1.3 million arrived. It appears as if we will have a similar number to report for 2019 too. The reason for the lower numbers of immigrants is because fewer people were coming, but even more people are returning home as we have seen.

Returns

Between 2010 and 2017, approximately 470,000 immigrants returned home every year. Between 2017 and 2019, these numbers went up significantly to 975,000 each year. In the first two years of the Trump Administration, twice as many immigrants left the U.S. as in the years before.

The Reasons for Outward Migration

The reason that people are leaving isn’t the economy. Immigrant unemployment was low in 2016, and it kept falling through 2017, 2018 and 2019. In addition to that, American industries created more than 5 million jobs during this time.

More people were returning to the workforce in 2019, and this included the least educated populations. Wages have also been going up at this time, so the idea that high levels of immigration create economic prosperity appears to be wrong. It even shows that the opposite is true. When American workers are not competing with illegal immigrants, the Americans begin to do better.

The truth is that immigration can be controlled even if the economy is going very well, but this may not help you. If you or a loved one need legal immigration help Los Angeles, you need to consult with an immigration lawyer today.
