People Become Naturalized Citizens During Government Shutdown

There was a full house at the St. Dominic in Delhi Township, Ohio on Friday, January 25, 2019. The room was packed with people who had become naturalized citizens. People from 32 countries are now officially American citizens.

Carlos Lopez Betancourt is one of the people who became a naturalized citizen. He has been in the United States for 15 years. He spent the last two years in Ohio. He stated that he came to the United States with his family from Venezuela. They came to America because they wanted to have a better life.

Carlos said that he has been trying to become an American citizen for the past five years. He stated that it has been a long journey, and he still has a long way to go. However, he knows that he has taken a step in the right direction.

Carlos stated that everyone in the room was able to become legal American citizens despite the government shutdown. He said that the immigration process is actually a part of the judicial system. This is considered an essential service.

Friends and family members took pictures with the new citizens. The judge even posed with people. Carlos said that he wants to be an inspiration to his family members. Many of Carlos’s family members are still going through the immigration process. He wants to be able to support them through this process. St. Dominic has had several immigration ceremonies over the past 15 years.
